Random Rewards
If you are like most Americans, you have signed up for multiple rewards programs. Businesses across multiple industries have jumped on the bandwagon to try and retain customers through these programs. Some accumulate points (think frequent flyer programs), others give a free item for every X items purchased or dollars spent, and some just offer discounts when you buy (grocery store cards).
A newer take on these programs focuses on random rewards. As an example, Panera Bread’s program (mypanera.com) drops surprise rewards onto the cards of those registered. There is no guarantee that I’ll get a reward, but I might be surprised with a free bagel or smoothie. The program encourages people to swipe their rewards card every time they visit a Panera store. Not only does Panera then capture purchase data for analysis, they have better control over the rewards program budget—they decide how many free offers to make and what their value will be.
As a speaker, you can use this same random rewards concept to keep your audience engaged. A couple of my favorites include giving treats (usually chocolate!) to folks who answer questions during the session, offering a free white paper to anyone who fills out the post-speech evaluation, or randomly drawing a name for a small gift card ($10 gas card, for example) during the event. You might also tape a gift card to the bottom of one of the chairs and have the audience check to see if they have won—time this for when they need a break! Alternately, simply recognizing an achievement by an attendee can be its own reward. If you have e-mail addresses, give a follow-up reward or tidbits of information. Just remember, to be a real reward you cannot expect to get anything in return. Give some thought to how you might reward your audience and get them talking about you!
