@vincehaven or @davehaven?
Whether you read a book or watch TV, you’ve probably noticed that social media references are now woven throughout the story. I saw a bit of a new twist on that a few weeks ago while watching the show Haven.There are two brothers who own the local newspaper in Haven—Vince and Dave. The show’s producers have taken the approach of having an on-air and off-air contest to see whether Vince or Dave can get the most followers on Twitter. Throughout the show, you see post-it notes with “Follow @davehaven” or signs left in common areas with “Follow @vincehaven.”
Of course, after seeing this in the first episode, I had to check it out. The profiles are set up as if these characters are real people. They are customized with the scenery from the show. And the tweets follow the storyline or add insight into the characters. If you didn’t know better, you would believe these are real people providing information about their hometown!
On the plus side, this is a very creative way to garner attention and promote a cause. It’s something a bit different that makes viewers want to check it out and see if it is “real.” It also adds a fun component to the show. These pages do point out one of the risks of social media, as well. When you are online, how do you know what is fact or reality?
In the several weeks since the contest began, Vince has gotten over 16,200 followers and Dave has just over 15,700 (Dave needs to step it up!). This Twitter “contest” can provide some great ideas for you on how to think outside the box when setting up your social media campaigns. Need more information about social media?
